Shaka ILembe ready to air

Broadcasting company MultiChoice Group is about to debut its biggest ever prime-time drama series, Shaka ILembe, an epic blockbuster which features some of South Africa’s celebrated talents.

The series which has 12 episodes will start airing on MultiChoice on 18 June.
The Shaka ILembe tale follows the origins story of the legendary African monarch and military strategist, King Shaka of the great Zulu Kingdom.

Its creative team is helmed by Oscar-nominated director Angus Gibson, executive producers Nomzamo Mbatha, Nhlanhla Mtaka and Desiree Markgraaff, working with Professor Hlonipha Mokoena (Cultural and Historical Advisor).

All the scenes on the production, which took six years to complete, were entirely shot in South Africa, with the locations including the towns of Eshowe, Nkandla Forest, Port Edward, Drakensberg, Mooi River and Zulu Falls.

The series features a stellar cast in the names of Nomzamo Mbatha, Lemogang Tsipa, Thembinkosi Mthembu, Wiseman Mncube, Mondli Makhoba, Sthandiwe Kgoroge and introduces Ntando Zondi.
Starring alongside them will be Abdul Khoza, living legends Don Mlangeni and Vusi Kunene among many others, making Shaka ILembe a powerful ensemble drama.

MultiChoice Zimbabwe Publicity and Public Relations manager, Liz Dziva said the series presents the best of African storytelling. She said it was one of the biggest productions fully funded by the

MultiChoice Group as part of their expansive local content slate.

“It was created for a local market, but it is also, most certainly, a global television property.

“This is an epic series, told on an epic scale and it is destined to keep audiences tuned in with strong plot lines, stunning visuals, an evocative soundtrack, and a range of powerhouse performances.

“We are so excited for our audiences to see Shaka ILembe and embrace this world of kings, queens, prophets, warriors, strategists, and lovers.

“The cast and crew have done an outstanding job in telling this majestic larger-than-life story. As a result, it is a polished and compelling drama series filled with conflict, action, romance, betrayal, sacrifice, struggle, triumph, and loss,” said Dziva.

Speaking to her dual roles on Shaka ILembe, Nomzamo Mbatha said:

“This series is rich in depth, and was shot in 4K on a tremendous scale that fuels the narrative. From the fierce battlefield choreography and the meticulous accuracy of the wardrobe to the resonance of the script, it’s remarkable.”
