MPOPOMA’S Mathonisa Beer Garden provided the venue for the second Bulawayo Draughts Association (BDA) tournament that saw Pumula and Iminyela conclude the competition tied on position one.
Pumula and Iminyela scored 221 points. The venue was filled to the rafters with nine teams – Pumula, Iminyela Mzilikazi, Matshobane, Sizinda, Esiqongweni, Entumbane, Patapata and Mathonisa seeking to outdo each other.
The hosts came out as the third best team with 217 points to their name.
After being shunned by potential sponsors for years, it was a pity to witness that there were no prizes for the tournament’s top performers with BDA president, Frazer Bhizayi, indicating that greater rewards would come at an end of year tournament.
Bhizayi said the games were fun to be a part of and saw a very tough competition.
“The competition was stiff as you could tell by the results, it was a tight race for number one. Normally there is always number one, two and three but here it was a different game play. We could not reward the top club because we are still looking for sponsorship. Top performers will definitely be rewarded at our end of year tournament,” said Bhizayi.
BDA spokesperson Simbarashe Pfakacha said he was happy with the way the games were played.
“We had a great attendance, as the people came in their numbers to watch us play and also take part in their own individual games. We wish to continue in that spirit. Our next tournament will be played in Pumula Old,” said Pfakacha.
