MAGWEGWE Development Club is set to launch a junior football league on 2 April in a bid to revive grassroots soccer.

The football junior league will have 12 teams which are going to compete in the Under-14, 16 and 18 age groups.
Chairman of the Magwegwe Club, Joshua Makhawa, who is co-ordinating the league, said the aim of the league was to groom and nurture young football talent.

a?We believe that there are a lot of talented young players out there, but they donat get the chance to showcase their talent. Thus by having a league we believe that we are giving youngsters a platform to showcase their talent and receive proper mentorship. We are expecting players aged between six to 18 to take part in the leagueas contests,a? he said.

Makhawa added that they had so far approached the Zifa Bulawayo provincial leadership that had given them a go-ahead.

a?We approached the Zifa board which has given us a green light to continue with formulation of the league. Consequently, on Saturday we will be having an official launch of the league and we are expecting dignitaries from the Ministry of Sports and the Zifa leadership,a? he said.

Despite looking forward to the launch, Makhawa added that they were still looking for donations from the corporate world.

a?We are kindly asking for donations that will help us fulfill the main purpose of the league. We seek to create a socially innovative childhood through sports. Currently we have managed to acquire registration for three groups from Owen Ncube who is based in London and I hope that we will manage to acquire the necessary funding,a? he said.
