I’m not Division One material: Beefy Ncube

VETERAN coach, Philani “Beefy” Ncube, never fails to entertain in interviews, and his latest remarks following Arenel Movers’ relegation from the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League did not disappoint.

After a 1-0 loss to 2024 champions Simba Bhora, Ncube described himself as unsuitable for Division One football.

“We are going to Division One, of course, but I’m no longer required there. Even Simba Bhora knew Beefy was in town – why go to Mpumalanga or Ingangula? I’d rather stay home, look after my children, or do gardening. I’m not Division One material, that’s for sure,” Ncube said.

However, Ncube’s contribution to local football can never be underestimated. His managerial journey includes stints at Harare City, How Mine, Njube Sundowns, Zimbabwe Saints, Bulawayo City and Chicken Inn, among others.

Ncube’s most recent appointments have been at Nico United (Botswana), where he was sacked in January 2023 after a string of poor results and Adachi Football Club, which he joined in March 2023.

With Arenel’s relegation confirmed, Ncube’s future in the sport remains uncertain. One thing is clear, however – he will not be plying his trade in Division One.

“I’m not Division One material,” he reiterated.

The problems at Arenel have been many, and it was not a surprise that they got relegated. The team has on several occasions failed to camp before a game while salaries and allowances to players has also been a challenge.

However, last year, when the club was playing in the Zifa Southern Region Division One, they defied all odds to win the ticket to the Premiership.
