EMGANWINI Celtics maintained dominance of the Jonah Annual Football Tournament by clinching the eighth edition of the competition on Christmas Day.
The Jonah Annual Football Tournament is played in rural Plumtree, at Nyabane Primary School, every year. The tournament draws teams from rural Plumtree as well as some teams from Bulawayo. The idea of inviting Bulawayo teams is to spice up the competition levels at the tournament. Emganwini Celtics emerged the winners of this year’s edition after beating Mainline FC by a goal to nil.
The team won last year’s edition as well. “As usual the community of Nyabane as well as surrounding villages like Tshangwa come out in their numbers to support their teams.
“The communities feel a sense of pride when watching their own children play at the tournament and they always look forward to the tournament every festive season,” said Clistone Bazaya, a member of the local organising committee.
For the last eight years, Christmas Day has never been the same as villagers look forward to a day of football and music. Clement Magwaza was the headline act after the tourney and performed in front of an appreciative crowd. Last year Magwaza also performed after the tournament and proceeds from gate takings at his show were used to renovate a section of the local Nyabane clinic. T
he tournament is sponsored by South Africa based businessman Jonathan Ndlovu, who was raised in Nyabane and this year he bankrolled the event to the tune of R30 000.
