BOSSOaS FIRSTS

Fungai Muderere
Founded in 1926, by the descendants of Mzilikazi who were the grand sons of Lobengula, Albert and Rhodes as Lions Football Club and assumed the name Highlanders in 1936 as Matabeleland Highlanders Football Club, this year Bosso celebrates its 90th anniversary having made milestone achievements that have been envied by local and foreign football teams.

In the words of yesteryear scholar Robert F Kennedy which read:A a?Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly, a? the Bulawayo football giants have showed to all and sundryA a?there is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.a?

It does not need Biblical Solomonic wisdom for one to discover that the clubas yesteryear, current leaders and players have proved that only those who attempt the absurd can achieve the impossible as the club is associated with several firsts which include:

– First club from the Southern Region to win the Chibuku Trophy

– First club from the Southern Region to win the league title

– First team to win the Chibuku Trophy in independent Zimbabwe

– First club to win the first Heroes Trophy (1980)

– First club to win the Independence Trophy

– First club to win the new Castle Cup in 1986

– Blue Ribbon League title in 1993

– First club to win the league title four times in a row in the modern day Premiership

– First Zimbabwean team to play in Europe, German tour of 1987

– Most successful club in the history of the PSL with five titles in 12 years.

As if this is not enough, during the years the black and white camp has transformed from just a social organisation to become a commercial entity that has a sellable brand.

It boasts of membership above 2 000 who are based all over the world.

The club has an average attendance of between 8 000 and 26 000 depending on the opposition they face on a particular day.

Among some of the greatest developments at the club was acquiring properties which include a clubhouse, a camping house (Hotel California) and an office in Bulawayoas Central Business District. Bosso became the first local team to buy a clubhouse in 1986.

The clubas administrative structure is governed by a constitution. The constitution spells out the objectives of the club as well as the governance structure which is composed of Members of the Club (Life and Ordinary), Trustees, Board of Directors, Executive Committee, Chief Executive Officer and employees.
